BOSTON, MA (April 8, 2011) – New York artist Daniel Edwards announces the unveiling of his latest sculpture “Citgo’s Green Monster (Portrait of Hugo Chavez)” through Cory Allen Contemporary Art (CACA) today. Edwards says the sculpture addresses the unlikely juxtaposition of the large Citgo sign with Boston’s Fenway Park. The sculpture can be viewed on the official Daniel Edwards page on Facebook.
The Citgo sign, considered a landmark, is visible just over the top of the Green Monster, the 37-foot wall in left field at Fenway Park. The Venezuelan owned symbol is as much a part of the landscape there as home plate.
“I fear the Boston Red Sox will never be America’s team with the Citgo sign so embedded in the landscape of Fenway Park,” said the artist.
Edwards said he started working on the large bronze bobblehead bust of Boston Red Sox mascot Wally the Green Monster sitting atop the head of Hugo Chavez, who is depicted wearing the Venezuelan coat of arms on his sash and the Citgo logo emblazoned on his chest, shortly after the sign was turned on again last September after several months of repairs.
“First it was the 12-year-wait after Jackie Robinson before the Red Sox finally integrated, then it was the failure to make sure Ted Williams received a proper burial, and now this, the Citgo sign looming over the Green Monster,” said Cory Allen, the artist’s representative.
In 2006, Jerry McDermott, a Boston city councilor, proposed that the sign be removed in response to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's insults toward America.
