MOGUL (JAY Z OCCUPIES OCCUPY WALL STREET)

Media & Blog Coverage:

Jay Z Depicted as a ‘Scrooge’ in Artist’s Occupy Wall Street Protest Piece

New York - Rap mogul Jay Z is the focus of artist Daniel Edwards’s latest work in a sculpture dedicated to the Occupy Movement to be unveiled this week on facebook, announces Cory Allen Contemporary Art.  “I think Jay Z has made himself a face of Wall Street that Occupiers are protesting against,” said artist Daniel Edwards, referring to Jay Z’s usage of the movement’s name to sell his t-shirts without compensation.

Titled “Mogul (Jay Z Occupies Occupy Wall Street),” Jay Z is depicted as shirtless and broad-shouldered with chain necklaces and a bling dollar sign on his chest.  Stacked on his head are the heads of notorious fictional moguls, which include Mr. Burns from The Simpsons, Disney’s Scrooge Mc Duck and Richie Rich. “Daniel is a fan, so he’s having fun with Jay Z while criticizing him for being a little greedy,” said the artist’s representative Cory Allen.

“Maybe Jay Z is striving to be in the one percent? Which is why I chose the composition of a totem pole because I thought it would resemble the number one.” said Edwards.  “Rap stars who turn ‘Scrooge’ have to suffer some damage to their street credibility, I would think,” added Edwards.

Other works by Edwards include the “Memorial Portrait for Amy Winehouse,” which features the deceased singer with a songbird and lilies in her hair, and “Justin and Selena as One,” which features the teens conjoined.
